Community-based mangrove habitat restoration and conservation programs
Indonesia has the world’s largest area of mangrove forests and is responsible for protecting mangrove forests as part of the global community in combating Greenhouse Gases by safeguarding these vital ecosystems. Indonesia possesses more mangroves, in terms of the number of species and areas than other countries, arguably making it the most important mangrove habitat in the world.
On 10th May 2024, in collaboration with Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN), Yayasan Tahija embarks on a transformative journey. We are launching a community-based mangrove habitat restoration and conservation initiative in the Bangka and Belitung Islands. These programs are envisioned as a model for sustainable mangrove restoration activities, which can enhance the quality of life for communities in the restoration area. The mangrove restoration and conservation program is expected to support carbon sequestration, coastal protection, fisheries, tourism, and other community benefits. The model will become a community-based mangrove restoration and conservation model that can be applied and developed in other areas in an economically and sustainable way.
